Ehi and welcome to this new WriteOff round!

This message is going to be short… I’ve been kidnapped by changelings…

Keep your pony stories under 750 words or Chrysalis will hex you.
Don’t disclose your identity or Chrysalis will cocoon you.
No fancy prompt or Chrysalis will bug you.
Start your work Saturday 12GMT and submit it by Sunday 12GMT or Chrysalis will bore holes in your exoskeleton.

HELP! HELP! SHE’S COMING…

Hello! I’m the new Monokeras… Come here my little contestants, I’m so eager to know you…

I'll bore holes in Chrysalis's exoskeleton, if you know what I mean...

>>Syeekoh
I know exactly what you mean.

I too like to read my stories to others until (round) parts of them decide they've had enough and leave :P
#5 · 4
·
I only read my work to people if I consider it WELL-WRITTEN.
#6 ·
·
Well. I'll be entering this one. Sigh..... why ROGER whhhhhhyyyyyyy!? So get ready for some intense reviews.
#7 ·
·
Quick someone place "tra la la" and "ding dong" as their prompts and I love them forever and ever!
#8 · 1

Alright, T minus twenty-one hours till writing and my ideas are already coming together. Now to see which prompt they'll be shoehorned into...
#9 · 2

Hmm. I may try to enter. Though My entire writing period takes place during a DnD session here everyone gets pissed at me if I so much as look at my laptop.

I've been there before, and the pride is real. Unfortunately I don't think the system ever reveals who you are.

Woot, panicked too soon. Story idea #1 is growing unbounded at a rapid pace, but story idea #2 has ended at a length that can probably be pared-down for submission.
#27 · 2
·
Crap crap crap. I've got like, 4 hours left to write something... And I have no real good ideas. :/

I kinda slapped together a cruddy entry for the last competition, and I'm running dry tonight... Not really a good trend, and I'd hate to miss another write off... Come on thinkin meats! Get to work! O.o
#28 · 2

I'm back at last! Let us see if Queen Chryssy approves of my efforts this time around.
#29 · 2

Second story complete.

Probably also easy to guess as one of mine, even though it's definitely not my usual submission.

I think that's it for me for this round. Good luck, everypony!
#30 · 2

Ugh... This story is fairly mediocre, but at least it's something. Now all I need is space for an extra fifty words or so, so I can finish it!

Once again I say... Ugh. :/

· · >>FrontSevens >>CoffeeMinion
Huh, what do you guys think? I saw this was up, saw the prompt, thought No way can I write about any of the typical stuff--so I guess I'm out this round.... and wondered if I could think of anything else, immediately came up with something, and for once opened a doc and started typing without overthinking it. Now I have...just over 300 words. The question is, should I finish and submit it? There's not much time left, it's already late in my time zone, and honestly, I'm not sure the story is any good at all. I kinda like it, but that's because it's straight from my brain. I dunno if it's worth submitting when I'm pretty sure I'll only get neutral-to-negative comments on it.
#34 · 4
· · >>CoffeeMinion >>Kitcat36

Cards on the table, I don't really like my entry, but I've been fighting with unproductivity for a long time now, and I'll be damned if I skip out on another Writeoff. You guys are just going to have to deal with a less-than-absolutely-perfect story. :P
#38 · 1
·
>>FrontSevens
That is a good point. I'll try it. I hope I get useful feedback. I can see this getting just frustrated comments at poor writing or something...that's my fear. I'm particularly nervous because I think I'm just going to get something like, "That's a tricky writing technique and it wasn't well executed" or "...and it didn't work [for this story]". That...would suck.

The theme of my minific changed midway through the writing process, but I feel that this still needs to be said.

Happy International Survivors of Suicide (SOS) Day. I personally have been positively influenced by a friend and by MLP itself to not act negatively while under the influence my depression. If you are struggling, get help. You are not alone. Don't do something in your depression that you would never even think of doing in your rationally thinking mind.

Me in High School: 400 words? How will I ever get that much written?
Me in College : 400 words? That'll take all weekend.

I'm not sure if quality has gone up, but quantity certainly has as I've aged.

I'm in much the same boat. My sleep schedule is wacked so I crashed right before the prompt released, wasted 12 hours in bed, then got pulled into the free Overwatch weekend with some friends. · · >>Orbiting_kettle >>Winston
Holy cow! Got in a second one JUST under the wire. First attempt I had as an idea last night right as I went to bed (right when the prompt vote closed) but I was sleeping and then busy with other stuff most of the day, so only had 5 hours total for this contest. Spent an hour writing and two hours editing it down. That left just under two hours for a second entry. 30 minutes brainstorming, 20 minutes writing, a 20 minute break to clear my head, and 20 more minutes writing, then last minute editing and formatting.

The funny thing is I'm more proud of the entry that I only wrote in 40 minutes with no planning than the one floating and being planned in my head all day. But this is why I don't practice dentistry on talented equines. I don't care how fickle the muse is, so long as she shows up in time! Which she did... barely. So yay! Let's DO THIS!
#59 ·
·
>>Xepher

I've been reading everyone else's reviews for stories I've looked at (not that many so far, sadly), and I think the reviews I've read by you seem very helpful, not harsh at all. They're the kind of reviews I most like to get, since they give details of what actually worked for the reader and what didn't, and have specific sections to focus on and different ways to approach problem sections, etc. I won't say whether you've gotten to my fic yet, because I don't want to compromise my anonymity, but I hope you and everyone else keep the reviews up. Speaking from my experience as a newbie writer, the more feedback, the better! And as a newbie, I know I really need the help!

Recordings!

Of four live readings and three discussions that we did before I departed to attend a controlled exsanguination.

We read:
Entering and Breaking
Scorpion Days
The Princess Sleeps
After Party

We also discussed them, but I left directly after reading After Party, so it only has the reading recorded.

There were also readings after I left, but I wasn't there to record them. I apologize.

This is a link to the google Docs folder where you can download them as MP3's.

It may be a bit early to do a review of the underrated, but here in the States, tomorrow is the Feast of St. Tryptophan and the day after is Shopping Mall Battle Royale. Thus, better to get it out before people have to deal with holiday obligations and bloodlust-inducing bargains.

"Moon Bright" (#3,) "Romancing an Alicorn" (#27,) "The Power of the Sun" (#34,) "Post Metamorphosis" (#36,) "Don't Speak" (#37,) "Wings" (#41,) "After Party" (#49,) and "Dawn" (#50) all have only three reviews each.

"Breaking the Mold" (#38) has four comments by three different people.

Now you know, and knowing is half the Writeoff.
#86 · 2
· · >>Not_A_Hat
>>FanOfMostEverything
The tryptophan thing is an urban legend.

BtM now has five comments by four ponies.

Wait WHAT? Oh buckit! I thought the Gallery was shuffled for every reader! I've been reviewing them from 1 to 50 because I thought my order was unique, otherwise I'd randomly permute them and use that order.

:facehoof:

Is there any way they could be permuted? Maybe they have the same numbers, but if you're logged in, you might have your own order they appear in the Gallery by which the forward-and-back arrows agree with...? (Or at least maybe the Gallery could start with a random number and then proceed normally down and wrap around to 1.)

That's a lot to ask of Roger, but I had no idea I was making this mistake. This is very likely why most of the "only three reviews" are the higher numbers.
#87 · 2
· · >>Trick_Question
>>Trick_Question You probably made that mistake because the prompts are shuffled randomly, so the top one doesn't get all the votes. Although...

Or at least maybe the Gallery could start with a random number and then proceed normally down and wrap around to 1.

I think it used to do this, now that you mention it. It probably stopped when Roger re-worked the ballots, because they now have a built-in shuffler and most people read off of them anyways.
#88 · 1
·
>>Not_A_Hat
I do that except when I know I'll have time to review them all.

So maybe it doesn't matter much in my case, but it does mean the later stories will need to wait much longer for commentary. That can have an effect on the voting if I see something another author didn't, or vice versa, but then again the stories are randomized to begin with so I might be overworried. :derpytongue2:

>>Monokeras
I gotta prep one myself. The lesser of my two stories is not at all likely to make the cut.

I'm certain the better one will make it, and there's not much I'd change about the story (sometimes you gotta disagree with your critics).
#95 · 3
· · >>Bachiavellian
Okay! Ranking is finally done.

Surprises (to me):

Maybe I'm getting cynical and picky, but I was really underwhelmed by most of the stories this time. :fluttershyouch: The only two I will demand get published on Fimfiction are Abhorrent Amalgamation (please change the title kthx) and Happily Ever After* (but not sure you can expand this any more without totally ruining it), and for all you applebuckers know I'm a raving douche and I wrote both of those and I hate everypony who isn't me because I'm the best all of you die in a river bleaaaaarrrgh.

After those two, my next favorite story? Day One. Seriously, I'm not making this up. It was creative, it had an interesting and upbeat message, and I was right there in Luna's horseshoes the entire time. It wasn't as technically beautiful as most of the stories, but I didn't get the 'random' feeling most readers did. I don't know if it can be made publishable in a way that most readers would enjoy it, so I don't know what to recommend to the author.

Or maybe I wrote that one too and I'm still a self-absorbed writer who thinks she's better than everypony else.

Maybe I wrote ALL the stories. :rainbowdetermined: Suck it. :facehoof:

For the record, just so I don't seem crazy: conditionally, I think A Good Filly should definitely be published too, but it needs work—the motif bothered me enough that it got dinged by a few slots, so Day One ended up scoring higher. There were a plenty of other stories this time that were amazing writing but didn't seem to relate to ponies at all, which hurt them: Scorpion Days is probably the most well-written story in the contest but the connections didn't make sense and some of the meaning was overly-subtle (or just didn't speak to me personally).

Filthy Rich took 70% in my rating, and there's no way it will make the cut. I'm so, so sorry. I just don't know what went wrong. (Did I mention I was underwhelmed?)

Good luck everypony! :pinkiehappy:

I want to apologize to the authors of the roughly 25 or so stories that I haven't read or reviewed. I don't think I'm going to get around to yours before the end of the prelims, and I feel really bad about it. I prided myself on getting through all the different entries during my first two writeoffs, and this time, I have failed you all in the most horrific way.

Okay, I think that's all the reviews I have time for tonight. I got about half of the stories read, but I put them off for too long to write reviews for all of them. I'll try to get more reviews done in the finals, and if anyone who doesn't make the cut wants to know what I thought of their story, I'll be glad to let you know if you ask.

I'll see you all in finals!
I mean, when I next get online, prelims will be over and the finals will have begun. I have no idea if my story will make the cut or not.
