Anyway, mine’s in as of half an hour ago. I edited a few bits here and there and did some basic proofreading in the time left.

Well, I guess I'd make better use of my time by reviewing some stuff instead of beating myself up over missing the deadline. I'm rather new at this whole "reviewing" business though, so maybe take what I have to say with a grain of salt.
That said, I've already mentioned in one of my FimFiction blogs that I'm correcting last semester's mistake by being a student first and brony second. The amount of time I'll be able to dedicate to Writeoff is entirely dependent on how merciful my professors are (or more likely, aren't).

Luna damn it. This is like the one week when I just can't afford the time to binge on Writeoff fics, and reading this comment thread is getting me way too excited about digging into this round's entries. Everyone's really enjoying the things they're reading (!), and apparently there's a Finnegans Wake riff (!) and several pieces of pony SF (!) and two mysteries (!!) and a Time Enough For Love homage (!!!) and just what.

I only have eight stories left to review and I've to say I'm really liking this round. Even with the stories I didn't enjoy as much I can still see a great deal of effort and dedication.

I agree with >>Zaid Val'Roa et al. that The quality of stories this round is really high. But here's the thing: I haven't found any that I actually really like yet. They're all really good, but I'm not enjoying them.
I realize this is completely a matter of taste, and I've only read my initial slate so far. But it's still weird that my reaction to every story so far has been "that was great, but it's not for me."

I think I've decided to move forward with editing Celestiology, AKA my first Writeoff story that I consider an overall success. It's still pretty rough around the edges, and it definitely feels aged, but I think I can spit-shine it a little.
[b]Top of Georg’s second Round Micro Reviews for the new stories on my slate The Darkest Hour (None of which are How Many Princesses Does It Take, which would have fit the theme so well. Sigh.) Scores are letter grades for Plot, Technical Work, and Characterization mushed together, with an E for stories I find particularly Enjoyable. Ranked by how I like them, not necessarily how perfect they are on the score. (and posted all at once, from top to bottom so they line up on the chat.) Once again, I got a collection of good ones. When I was done reading, I didn’t think any of them had been a waste of my time. It only makes me appreciate our fandom writers more, although I worry that we have driven away some marginal writers with room for great improvement by our leet writezor skillz. :)

Time Enough to Be Dazzling: No one's entirely sure how the sirens found their way back to Equestria, much less Manehattan, but it's all Vinyl can do to keep things civil between them and Starswirl.
The House Ruins Everything: After Nightmare Moon establishes her harsh but fair regime, Strong Arm, now a valued member of the monarchial bureaucracy, comes to collect on 720 Entertainment's startup loan. Zephyr's sister—who can totally get him out of this, he swears—is nowhere to be found. Pinkie and Maud co-host the farewell party.

At the Wake of Dawn: Starlight wakes up and can't make head or tails of her own thought process. Deeming these thoughts not fit to share with the rest of Equinity, she decides to exile herself. Monologues, regrets, divisive literary choices.
Cutiesugi: When a filly appears having lost her cutie mark, Pinkie Pie, Spike and Apple Bloom decide to paint her a new one. Mystery, Introspective analysis of the worth of the individual, Arts and Crafts tips.

Then Zephyr Breeze comes crashing back into their lives with a stolen time machine, and a pissed-off minotaur and an on-again/off-again Time Lordy-type come looking for him. Now our erstwhile lovers must reconcile their differences and help Zeph escape or risk having Fluttershy's reformation of Discord be erased from history, thus returning him to bad guy status and condemning Equestria to eternal chocolate milk rain... (Also Zeph gets shipped with Vinyl Scratch because of the title, I guess?)

So... I feel incredibly toolish right now, with the whole promising a publish and not getting it out. :S
In all honesty, it was a lot harder than I expected to get back into the mindset I was in when I originally wrote the story. I guess that's what happens when you abandon something for two years. :P
Still, I've made some good progress and I've finally figured out what I want to do with the themes. So, I guess the challenge was kinda sorta a success, in that it finally got my wheels turning. Concession prizes for everyone!
Anyways, congrats to all our winners and participants this round! It looks I was really out of sync with what everyone else enjoyed--I actually had "To Fly" at the top of my slate. Always interesting to read differing opinions, though, so thanks for that, guys.
Gonna keep plugging away at editing; hopefully I'll be done before the next competition starts. See you guys then!

In all honesty, it was a lot harder than I expected to get back into the mindset I was in when I originally wrote the story. I guess that's what happens when you abandon something for two years. :P
Still, I've made some good progress and I've finally figured out what I want to do with the themes. So, I guess the challenge was kinda sorta a success, in that it finally got my wheels turning. Concession prizes for everyone!
Anyways, congrats to all our winners and participants this round! It looks I was really out of sync with what everyone else enjoyed--I actually had "To Fly" at the top of my slate. Always interesting to read differing opinions, though, so thanks for that, guys.
Gonna keep plugging away at editing; hopefully I'll be done before the next competition starts. See you guys then!
