Dam You Twilight Sparkle
Alright, alright! Settle down, everypony. I understand that many of you are upset. I’ve heard your complaints and I’ve read your letters, even the letters that contained anthrax or any number of deadly contact poisons. I think some other princesses would be upset by this, since technically it is attempted murder and also probably treason. Maybe even most other princesses. But not me. I take it as a sign of just how engaged the ponies of Ponyville are with their local government!

I mean, think about it. How many towns are there in Equestria that would resort to assasination over disagreement about a civic construction project? Not many! That’s real town spirit. You don’t see that much anymore.

That said, let’s talk about the Ponyville Dam.

I will be the first to admit, mistakes were made. While I think the dam is an excellent project and that it will provide great value to Ponyville over the coming decades, I could have communicated its benefits more clearly. The number of angry or possibly armed ponies in this room makes that clear that expectations were set too high. Ponies are disappointed. I see that now, and accept that some of this could have been avoided if I’d acted differently.

For instance, when I ran that article in Stallions Quarterly that hydroelectric power “gets mares totally wet,” I could have clarified that I was referring to the recreational water park built across the reservoir.

A water park that, I would note, gives Ponyville access to much needed entertainment options that will support it as it grows from a small to a mid-size town over the next five years.

I’m sure you all understand that politics is a delicate game. It’s not just about setting good government policy. I love policy. I love talking about policy. Sometimes I think that Equestria would be better if ponies who love policy were given direct control over local governments instead of being hampered by local government rights. But I digress.

The point is that policy alone doesn’t win referendums. You have to sell your idea to the people. And when building up expectations, sometimes it’s hard to know precisely where to draw that delicate line.

For example, in meeting with business leaders across Ponyville, I was careful to highlight the dam’s economic benefits. I think we can all agree this is a perfectly reasonable thing any pony in my situation would have done. But in hindsight, I could have talked about GDP growth, instead of winking and saying that maybe one particular firm would get a lucrative government contract if they could drive some votes my way.

Though I will emphasize that one particular firm did, after an open and unbiased bidding process. They aren’t based in Ponyville but they did a great job.
I notice that many of you are from the southern half of Ponyville. I understand there were no recording devices present at my meeting with the South Ponyville Homeowners Association, and so I do not recall precisely what I said. But if any of you did interpret my discussion of the dam’s benefits as a promise that it would wash away and destroy your arch-rivals in North Ponyville, I am sorry. I should also inform you that electrical death rays are not real.

Though if they were, the dam could easily power them, as it produces over one hundred megawatts of clean, environmentally sustainable baseline power.

Some ponies have also criticized my choice to use unconventional forms of political advertising. I remind you that the night sky is Luna’s personal demesne, and she can arrange it however she likes. I will also point out that I never said: “Vote for the dam or you’ll be devoured by timberwolves.” Ponyville’s astrologer Star Sign did.

I will be the first to urge him to apologize.

Some of you will not be satisfied by these answers. In the wake of any disappointing event, it is natural for ponies to ask questions. “Can we stop this from happening again?” “Was the dam really a good investment?” “Is Twilight nobility, and thus exempt from imprisonment for fraud?” The answer to all of these questions is yes, particularly since I can shoot lasers.

Still, I hope you will find forgiveness in your hearts. Anger, however justified it may seem, only holds us back and prevents us from seeing the good things all around us.

Like the new salmon migration spillway that ensures the dam doesn’t disrupt the local ecology.

political tactics can get really bizarre in a magical fantasy world. this starts off over-the-top and stays that way. the rhythm reminds me of articles from the early days of The Onion, where stories could be so ludicrous just for the purpose of being surreal. This Twilight doesn't need to be justified as aligning with whatever canon from the show; instead, just double down on how ridiculous the situation is developing.

I guess some people would dismiss that as "crackfic", but I think we can all agree to throw some votes to Twilight Sparkle in your writeoff ballots in exchange for water park tickets? wink wink.

I just couldn't engage with this one.

Maybe I'm too tired, but all the pseudo-political stuff in here just had me skimming. There were a few good jokes, but for the most part, I just found it hard to care. Perhaps my ennui with politics in general is spilling over? Maybe this is really sharp satire and I just don't see it, because I won't watch the news? I dunno. It feels like 'haha, politicians are liars, how hilarious!' with just enough super ridiculous bits for stand-alone sniggers. It feels like it wants to be comedy or parody or something, but I didn't find myself laughing very hard.

Yeah, I dunno. Maybe just ignore me here.

Hmmm. I get that this is supposed to be in crackfic territory, but I didn't really lock with it. Maybe it's just that 750 words is a bit too short of a ramp-up to create the needed buy-in about how a character would rationalize to themselves what an objective observer realizes is lunacy. Maybe it's just that this is Twilight, and it's too hard to see her easily becoming this kind of politician.

The comedy is there and it works fine, but the premise doesn't lend the narrative support it needs to really be golden through and through.

I'm lost on that last 'joke', actually, which is unfortunate, but overall I enjoyed this, and I definitely remembered it from the title. It reads like a comedy article, though, so I think you should get rid of those two opening sentences. This doesn't feel like a speech at all.

I also feel very strongly that this should have been a Mayor Mare story rather than a Twilight Sparkle story. Haze does make a good point about committing fully to the absurdity to bypass the fact that this doesn't gel with canon!Twilight characterisation, and that could work, but Mayor Mare just feels like a shoe-in for the story, without all that much tweaking needed either.

I wish I'd read this before I got sick. The laughing made my cough worse. I might actually be dying now, so thanks for that. This is probably going to end up pretty high on my slate on the comedic value alone.

I enjoyed the style and tone of the piece overall, and it got some decent laughs.

It reminded me of the "Twinkle-Nebula-Frie-Neutron" reunion story, though it doesn't have quite the same punch, to me. Comparing the two, there one of the things that stood out to me is motivation. The reunion shenannigans are grounded in Twilights (related) follibles, so much of the humor is science related, and feels very much up Twilight's alley. This story is more generic 'corrupt politician' which, while amusing, does not ring quite as true. We never really get a reason for Twilight to want this dam, but the few mad-scientist-esque asides were some of the stronger points for me. The reunion was also just a little more over the top, although this story had some really great elements, such as the lethal letters at the beginning.

I hope this extended comparison did not give the wrong impression - I did quite enjoy this story. I got a good laugh about the approach and tone regardless. It just gave me a bit of a sense of familiarity when I did read it, and I tried to explore my thoughts on the matter.

Like a couple pieces this round:

This one struck me as all set-up with no punchline. The set-up's got some funny stuff in it, but I was waiting for a bigger wallop at the end than I got. From all the talk of outrage among the citizenry, I was expected to learn at the end that the whole town had been swept off the map by a flood, but I'm left not quite sure what everypony's supposed to be so mad about...

I accept this "crackfic" description. A first for me! I'm sorry to see it didn't place better (or, I should say, I'm sorry the humor didn't land well since I agree with the ranking), but I had a ton of fun writing it. The concept was just silly. ^_^

I'm glad you liked it! Hopefully the polished version (when it eventually becomes FiMFic ready) will be just as funny.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It's pretty clear that the humor didn't quite land across the board. I'd go a little further and say that it doesn't need an edit, it needs a heavy rewrite due to structural issues. I think a lot of that is due to the length, so getting to expand it out for FiMFic will hopefully resolve a lot of these problems.
