I took three years of French and I needed to find ways to use it. :P

I honestly didn't think this piece would get first place. I'm perplexed, but grateful for anyone who liked it.

>>DuskPhoenix
I’m flattered that you like it. As >>Haze said, this was a digital piece, but I do appreciate that it looks good enough to look like a traditional piece. It would kind of make sense since most artist could work on both since it translates either way. I kind of figured that I would go for black and white pencil type of style for this piece.
And thank you for enjoying my art!

>>Fenton
This piece was actually inspired by one of my favorite artist, Finchwing, but I doubt my art could hold a candle to what she could do. I just happened to remember it during the Drawing portion that I wanted to enter something like that while adding my own flare to it. (The pony isn't a specific character, so I let that be open ended. One of the reasons why this is in a sort of black, gray, white sort of format.)

>>GroaningGreyAgony
Looking back at it, I agree with you. I guess I didn't notice the contrasts when I saturated the whole piece. But thank you for your review overall!

>>Super_Trampoline
I suppose so, though I don't think I’ve heard of it.

>>Dubs_Rewatcher
It's fine. I’m not offended or anything, and I wouldn’t think I could mimic the type of emotion that originally inspired this piece. Thanks for your honest opinion regardless.

>>The_Letter_J
Liked I said earlier, I didn't notice there wasn't enough contrast when I saturated the whole piece. I think it's something to keep in mind the next time I create a piece. And yes, I was going for the pony’s identity to be unspecific.

This was super last minute entry on my part so I actually did this piece in 3 in the morning when I realized the cut off date was on May 26. I thought I would have time on Friday to work on it, but apparently not. The low light on my screen made it looked darker to me so I just thought it looked fine at the time. However, I do agree to give it a more light vs dark contrast later when I edit and actually post this.

>>Fenton
I can see your point. I don't exactly remember what my sleep deprived mind was thinking at the time, but I assume I was going for the wing angle so it wouldn't look like a specific winged bird or creature. It could be a phoenix, a red bird, a griffin, a winged person, or anything the writer would see. Heck, it even looks like a sunset/sunrise.
Oh and a little known fact about me, I am completely horrid at coming up with names. Drawing and painting stuff, yep, but when naming something I’m at a lost. I suggest focusing more on the art piece rather than the title for your interpretations.
Thank you for your review regardless. ^-^

>>GroaningGreyAgony
Thanks! And I’ll think about that when I edit this in the final product.

>>Ratlab
I actually never noticed that before, but I could definitely see what you mean. If taking out of context, I could see the sun catching the clouds lighting the sky like fire. At the same time, the cool mist blowing against the mountaintop. I absolutely love unintentionally art, they open up so many interpretations and perceptions.

>>horizon
For this piece, I was going for a third person point of view. I wrote about this on another reply with a similar comment about the angle:

“I was going for the wing angle so it wouldn't look like a specific winged bird or creature. It could be a phoenix, a red bird, a griffin, a winged person, or anything the writer would see.”

The close up angle simply allows me to open up to those interpretations. Both in a literal and in a symbolic sense. Though, as you suggest, I think I could've executed this attempt a little better.
Another thing that led me to do the wings in this angle was of a diving bird on a steep incline if my memory serves me correctly. It's just something that hit me due to the limited amount of time I had to come up with before the cut off time. I actually thought I would have the time to work on my submission on Friday, which I found I didn't have.

And yes I agree with everything about contrast. I responded about this too:

“This was super last minute entry on my part so I actually did this piece in 3 in the morning when I realized the cut off date was on May 26. I thought I would have time on Friday to work on it, but apparently not. The low light on my screen made it looked darker to me so I just thought it looked fine at the time. However, I do agree to give it a more light vs dark contrast later when I edit and actually post this.”

Combined with a sleep addled mindset and a low lit room while running on pure determination to submit something didn't help. This was definitely another rushed piece that I felt a bit disappointed on when I saw it again that morning. Though, by this point I feel like I’m just making excuses since I know I am capable of fixing these issues. But yes, I’m aware that contrast and tone are some of the factors of an aesthetically pleasing art. I will definitely work on that.

Overall, I appreciate your detailed critiques and review. They're something to keep in mind whenever I work on future art pieces.

Thank you! I really do enjoy coloring pieces like this.

I think my goal for this is more for the writer’s interpretation, so I tried to give them the freedom to choose how they would see it. Yes, it’s rather a loose excuse, but I didn’t want to be too specific to constrict the writer. This is actually my first prompt sort of image thing as well, so that might’ve contributed to the lack of define concept. I would probably try to be more focus on a topic in the future if I do something like this again (most likely).

Also, might as well include my reply to your Rise review too. For both Shadows & Ashes and Rise, I was experimenting with cloud effect sort of style since I recently discovered it and decided to actually use it with these pieces (I actually made 3 different pieces in this style but randomly picked 2 to submit). You're probably right about me overusing this. Like I said, I was trying the style and see how it came out, at same time, I wasn't really motivated as I could’ve been so it isn't my best work.

Anyways, thanks again for the reviews, they were more thoughtful than what I usually get. I definitely appreciate your feedback on both pieces. :)

Like I said to >>Kritten, I may have been too loose with this piece. Also same as my reply to >>GroaningGreyAgony‘s comment, I recently got back into art because a friend, who is a writer here, asked me to join. Which led me to think I could try and get back into the groove of things by doing the art portion of the contest. I wouldn’t say it’s my best piece nor was Rise considering my minimal spark of inspiration, thus my rough draft sort of art.

Thank you for the feedback. I value every one I get.

I'm just going to add my tidbit as a regular artist.

Should we do this again? If so, how often?

I've done several art contests before, but this is actually the first time I did this kind of thing where instead of gaining some type of prize, the writers would write a story about a piece of art. Essentially, the artist gets to see the their piece 'come to life', so to speak. Personally, I enjoyed reading the various stories on different pieces and how the writers interpreted a image.

I think I would do this again and about how often, well, I guess it depends if the writers feel up to having drawings or images as prompts.

Is the drawing time appropriate?

It's really under the condition on the artist's quality of art and what they are drawing. If I wanted to get serious and use my painting style art, it would usually take me a day or two if I had free time, which isn't much lately. I believe the four days is appropriate.

The type of prompt and type of story the writer is writing also contributes to this, but I don't know. So a day or two depending on the type of story the writers would be writing.

Is the voting system appropriate?

I did think the length of voting time was a bit excessive. I get it if it's a story since some takes longer to read than others, but for art I think 3 or 4 days would be find which would give enough time for those in different time zones.

I don't have any other personal opinions on this topic besides voting on a art piece really depends on a person's perference on what the art style and the message are.

Do we need any new rules for art rounds?

Probably limit the number of art entries. I think the max of about 2 would be fine.

Awww, thank you for the compliment! I will tell you I really did three pieces in this style, but chose to enter this and 'Totally Not Thunderlane' in the end. This was more of me experimenting with this style of art, so it’s not my usual style I would’ve done. I guess I was going for an misty aesthetic sort of approach.

Unless someone procrastinates till the last moment. :P

I think I'll like that. I sort of wanted a way to make art without me sitting around till something just happen to pop in my head. And as for my writing, we'll see. I am horrid at forming words in a way that makes sense when there are time constraints and mediocre at best without them.

Your review actually made me blush, a lot. Thank you! I haven't been using my abilities to their full capabilities lately since I was so busy this year that I didn't have time to make art. Than I felt like my skills were rusty for weeks when I finally had the time. It didn't help that I felt that my art seemed to look wrong to me lately.

Besides that, I wanted to make something that conveys a sense of story that makes people wonder what was happening and if there’s a story to it. I think inspiration finally hit along the line, and this was the result. I was really excited when I posted this to see other people's reactions. But then became anxious and wondered if I went overboard, if it was too much. Funny that I became a nervous wreck afterwards when no one said anything about this piece for a couple of days.

Also I’m honestly horrible at coming up with names, but for this one I was set on finding the most fitting name as possible no matter how bad my naming skills were. ’Something Unforeseen’ was really a filler name at first. I looked at a Thesaurus for ideas then it turned into random search for inspirational quotes online. I even went as far as to ask my younger brother at some point. Nothing came to mind. ’Something Unforeseen’ just stuck after that when I realized it already was a fitting title.

And my personal favorite part of any art piece that I ever done is the mane/hair. I don't know why, but I find it's the most enjoyable part to do. It's additionally therapeutic to me for some weird reason.
